My thoughts on NBC World of Dance Week 1

NBC World of Dance Week 1 finally premiered! I waited months for this ever since it was announced. It’s a reality show for dancers by dancers. You’ve got judges like Derek Hough, Jennifer Lopez, and Ne-Yo. It’s also hosted by Jenna Dewan-Tatum and supervised by NappyTabs. My friends know that I’m a huge Kyle Hanagami fan and just knowing that he’s working behind the scenes excited me!

The first three weeks will show the Qualifiers. A two minute routine will be performed and the judges will score them based on performance, technique, choreography, creativity, and presentation. Each category is worth 20 points and each performance requires a combined total score of 80 or higher to move on.

NBC World of Dance Week 1

Here are my thoughts from this week’s competitors:

Super Cr3w (Team Division // Bboying)

Creating a Bboy routine is hard, executing the moves with precision and synchronization is even harder. It was so great to see Super Cr3w opening their doors to those outside the US. You’ve got familiar faces like Bboy Ronnie, Do-Knock, Mike Murda but I was most surprised to see Hong10 especially since I haven’t watched him in a long time. It was smart for them to go with a Coldplay song. It was perfectly used to showcase the fluidity of their movements. I can’t wait for them to really go hard. I’ve got an S on my the chest for this team! They have been doing this for years and they are still killing it.

SCORE: 88

D’Angelo and Amanda (Junior Division // Ballroom)

I am not a ballroom dancer and I haven’t watched enough ballroom videos to properly talk about technique. But I must say, for two juniors, this was amazing. I heard these two were in America’s Got Talent before? Seems to me like this competition is really for veteran dancers! D’Angelo’s dad was simply adorable backstage. He was strict when they practiced but was in a puddle of emotions after they performed!

Score: 88.3

Les Twins (Upper Division // Hip Hop)

I’ve got to be honest, I’m not always a fan of Les Twins choreos. I mean, they’re vicious in battles but their choreography isn’t always appealing to me. I’m super happy that they scored the highest though. What they showed was truly different from what they were usual. Shout out to the girl who yelled, “I’ll take you!” Also,  just have to point out that I loved seeing their reactions backstage after each group performed. They were so excited for everyone. They are all around good guys with genuine hearts. I can see why everyone loves them.

SCORE: 95.7

Nxt Lvl (Team Division // Clogging)

I appreciate clogging. So much cardio and footwork are needed to be able to pull of a solid routine. Not everyone is familiar with this dance style so it takes a certain kind of showmanship to draw people in which I think this group lacked. They were in sync but the routine probably wasn’t strong enough to win. It’s a shame because they could have brought a different flavor to the competition.

SCORE: 77 (Eliminated)

Keone and Mari (Upper Division // Urban Dance)

Keone and Mari are just beautiful together. You can tell by the way they danced the amount of work they put into honing their craft. I think they played this one safe though, pretty sure this was an old piece but it was enough to get them through. I’m hoping for a stronger routine when they come back because I know they can win it!

SCORE: 85

Kinjaz (Team Division // Urban Dance)

WHAT. WAS. THAT. J.Lo said it best when she said it was too short! The Kinjaz strong suit has always been their visual storytelling so I’m happy they’re showing that to the world. So much control and strength was needed for this routine and they executed it wonderfully. It was easily the cleanest routine of the night.

SCORE: 91

Diana Pombo (Junior Division // Contemporary)

Much like ballroom, I don’t have enough experience to say much about this routine. I did notice that she really showed off her flexibility a lot, more than her dancing skills. But the emotion she gave out was so raw and despite dancing alone, she owned that stage. And yes, who wipes their forehead with their feet??

SCORE: 89.7
