Why am I keeping track of my attitude of gratitude?

I mentioned in my last entry that I was going to start an attitude of gratitude. The decision came after encountering Elijah in the bible. Though he was encountering difficulty, God was sustaining him throughout his journey. It wasn’t really a grand miracle or anything. Instead, he was provided rest, food, and drink.

See, we look to God to make a big change in our life; we look to Him to grant us wealth or instantly make us healthier. But the truth is, He gives us enough. He makes sure we are given just enough for the day to keep us going. And we’re not grateful for that.

Thus the birth of my attitude of gratitude.

How’s my progress?

I’ll be keeping track of my attitude of gratitude through this blog entry. In here, you’ll find what I’m thankful for for the next few days. My discipler was hoping I could keep this up for a week, so let’s see how I do.

Attitude of Gratitude

Today was a bit of a challenge as I didn’t get as much sleep as I wanted because my cousin had come home at around five in the morning. Still, when you think about it, the blessings still outweigh the challenges.

  1. It was a Thursday and that means training day! I can’t wait to see and dance with the ministry today.
  2. Despite the lack of sleep, I woke up earlier than my alarm clock today. Hurray for a good sleep cycle!
  3. I’ll be starting a new series on my blog dedicated to dance videos. Stay tuned weekly to see my favorite dance videos on Youtube!

  1. Friday, Friday, Friday! Who wouldn’t be happy about that?
  2. A party celebrating our Cannes achievements will be happening later. Praise God for this win. We definitely needed it after the whole DOT fiasco.
  3. The end of the week usually means a more relaxed day at the office so I can really pace myself with the work today.

NOTE: This day wasn’t entirely great though. I had forgotten that I had mixed up the deadline of two of my reports so I had to find a way to fix that. I also got blocked from Facebook so I had no means of communicating with people.

  1. Ministry day! I get to spend the day with some of my favorite people and meet new friends who are interested in joining.
  2. Makikita ko crush ko. Yun lang. Bow.
  3. I had no work that day!

  1. Sleeping in and cuddling with my cats.
  2. Getting my nails cleaned and my eyebrows threaded. I’ve honestly neglected my pampering for a while.
  3. Again, NO WORK.

  1. I slept really early last night so I really woke up feeling refreshed today.
  2. I also got to present some 2017 Facebook updates for the team even though I technically crammed it.
  3. A heavy report that’s due by the end of the month was simplified to achieve an earlier deadline.

I’m starting an attitude of gratitude

I’ve decided to start an attitude of gratitude. Generally, I’d like to think of myself as a grateful person but lately I found myself struggling. Waking up is hard to do and just thinking about the day ahead makes me grumpy. There are times when I feel overwhelmed with too much work. Other times, I feel unproductive. I felt stuck in a vicious cycle of routines and I was getting tired of it.

In fact, I relate to the prophet Elijah at this very moment:

while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.”

(1 Kings 19:4)

How many times do we feel like giving up? I’m pretty sure we’ve all been in situations like this because let’s face it, life IS tiring. So what did Elijah do?

Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep.

All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.

(1 Kings 19:5-6)

What do we notice in the passages above?

  1. He slept. Most of the time the reason we’re too tired is because we’re not getting enough rest. And rest is valuable. It enables us to do our best, like a fully charged battery.
  2. When he woke up, he had food and water ready for him. It wasn’t a feast, but it was enough and it got him through the day.

The next day, the angel came back and he was fed again!

The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.

(1 Kings 19:7-8)

Isn’t it amazing how God was with him, to give him strength? We should be thankful to have such a caring Father! He provides for us and He sustains us.

And this is why I really want to start an attitude of gratitude. Sometimes we take the little things God does for us for granted. It’s because we’re always looking for the “best”. It may be the best food, best phone, best drink, best bag, best car, or whatever. But God holds a different standard of what’s best for us. The question is, are we grateful for it?

Attitude of Gratitude

I challenge you to take some time in the morning to think about three things you’re grateful for. Not only will this teach you an attitude of gratitude but it does get you in a pleasant mood for the day! Join me in trying out for the next week!

Curious about what I’m thankful for today? Here’s my list:

  1. I woke up to a gentle breeze from the electric fan today. Usually I get cranky in the morning because I get itchy from the heat (I sleep by the window). Now that the rainy season is here, I get to wake up all cozy wrapped up in a blanket.
  2. My mom wasn’t going to work today so I get to leave the house on my own time. I went from 70 minutes late yesterday to 3 minutes late today. Well, I’m still late but it’s an improvement! I was already in such a good mood that it didn’t matter.
  3. Since I knew my workload for the day, I knew I could go home early. I had already paced myself with the workload for the past few days and I’d like to think I’m going to end the week strong!

And that’s it. Simple as that. I hope you consider making your own lists in the morning.
